چکیده

[1] A period parameter tc and an amplitude parameter Pd determined from the very beginning of P wave are important for earthquake early warning (EEW), yet their dependence on source mechanism, focal depth and epicentral distance has not been fully studied. After the devastating Mw7.9 Wenchuan earthquake, hundreds of M4-6 earthquakes occurred with diverse focal mechanisms and depth range of 2–20 km. We calculate tc and Pd of these aftershocks and examine their dependence on magnitude, tc, distance, and depth. We find that tc correlates well with magnitude, but joint regression including distance and depth does not significantly improve the correlation. The effect of focal mechanism on the tc -magnitude correlation is not obvious. When P wave is nodal, tc measurement becomes inaccurate. Also, tc is systematically greater for slow earthquakes, leading to a possible false alarm. Thus, more studies are required to discriminate slow earthquakes for robust early warning. Single station estimation of earthquake early warning parameters by using amplitude envelope curve

In this study, new empirical relationships to estimate key parameters in Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system including magnitude, epicentral distance and Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) are introduced based on features of the initial portion of P-wave’s amplitude envelope curve. For this purpose, 226 time series recorded by bore-hole accelerometers of Japanese KiK-net are processed for earthq...

Early magnitude estimation for the MW7.9 Wenchuan earthquake using progressively expanded P-wave time window

More and more earthquake early warning systems (EEWS) are developed or currently being tested in many active seismic regions of the world. A well-known problem with real-time procedures is the parameter saturation, which may lead to magnitude underestimation for large earthquakes. In this paper, the method used to the MW9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake is explored with strong-motion records of the MW7...

Camera Pose Estimation in Unknown Environments using a Sequence of Wide-Baseline Monocular Images

In this paper, a feature-based technique for the camera pose estimation in a sequence of wide-baseline images has been proposed. Camera pose estimation is an important issue in many computer vision and robotics applications, such as, augmented reality and visual SLAM. The proposed method can track captured images taken by hand-held camera in room-sized workspaces with maximum scene depth of 3-4...

Analysis of seafloor seismograms of the 2003 Tokachi-Oki earthquake sequence for earthquake early warning

[1] Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) algorithms estimate the magnitude of an underway rupture from the first few seconds of the P-wave to allow hazard assessment and mitigation before the S-wave arrival. Many large subductionzone earthquakes initiate 50–150 km offshore, potentially allowing seafloor instruments sufficient time to identify large ruptures before the S-waves reach land. We tested an...

Development of earthquake early warning system in Taiwan

[1] With the implementation of a real-time strong-motion network by the CentralWeather Bureau (CWB), an earthquake early warning (EEW) system has been developed in Taiwan. In order to shorten the earthquake response time, a virtual sub-network method based on the regional early warning approach was utilized at first stage. Since 2001, this EEW system has responded to a total of 225 events with ...
